Before the World Cup, Every Player Starts Somewhere

The world’s attention is fixed on the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Fans are captivated by breakout stars announcing themselves on the global stage, veterans cementing their legacies, and underdogs rewriting expectations.

But long before the fanfare and the trophies, every player’s story began somewhere much smaller: a quiet street, a dusty pitch, makeshift goalposts, or simply the courage to join a game for the first time. That first moment – unremarkable to everyone else, but everything to the person living it – is where the real story starts.

We asked our students at LEAD Edu to find theirs. Not their biggest achievement or proudest win, but the moment they realized football was more than just a game. The moment it made them feel confident, inspired, or simply like they belonged.

For Fatima at LEAD Morocco, that moment happened in her own neighborhood at six years old.

“It wasn’t a real field, just a quiet road between houses with two stones as goalposts,” she remembers.

At first, she stood on the sidelines, intimidated by the older children already playing. But curiosity got the better of her, and she decided to join.

“The moment my foot hit the ball, it felt weird — I was scared, but excited at the same time.”

Then came the moment she still carries with her today:

“When I finally scored my first goal, I didn’t even know how it happened. The ball just bounced off my foot and went between the stones. Everyone started cheering my name. I felt proud in a way I’d never felt before. We played until it got too dark to see the ball.

That day I understood something: football made me forget about everything else. All the stress, the fear, it just disappeared when I was running after the ball. Since then, I knew this game was going to be a big part of my life.”

Her story echoes those of students across the LEAD Hubs in Liberia and Morocco. Their first meaningful moments with football aren’t defined by trophies or championships. They’re about discovering a sense of possibility that extends far beyond the pitch.

Throughout the World Cup, we'll be sharing more of these first football moments from students on our social media @leadeduorg, and we’d love to hear yours too.

What was your first meaningful moment with football?

Maybe it was your first goal, your first jersey, the first time you played with friends, or simply the moment the game changed the way you saw yourself.

Send your story to info@leadedu.org. We welcome written reflections, videos, photos, and anything else that helps tell your story. Selected submissions will be featured on LEAD Edu’s social media throughout the World Cup.
